Half Days

Just a reminder that the middle school will be full days except for Monday 24th and Wednesday 26th, which are half days.  We will dismiss our students at 12:10 pm on both days.

Arena Conferences and Student Led Conferences are November 24

Individualized Student Learning Plans (SLPs) have become an integral component how we meet the academic needs of students in our schools. This process of identifying each student’s specific learning needs via a SLP begins in 5th grade and is carried out every year thereafter. The use of SLP’s are initially embedded in fifth grade parent/teacher conferences and this process then continues in conferences at Deer Park Middle School and Deer Park High School.Deer Park Middle School will host SLP and Student Led Conferences during elementary conference week. On Monday, November 24, students at DPMS will be released at 12:10 so that SLP Conferences and Student Led Conferences can be held for the rest of that afternoon.

*12:45 - 3:30 – Scheduled SLP Conferences (6th-8th graders) and Student Led Conference s  (6th graders)

*4:00- 7:00 --    Arena Conferences in the gym (7th/8th graders) and Student Led Conferences (6th graders)

Parents of middle schoolers will soon receive more information regarding the SLP Conference and Student Led Conference (6th graders) time for their student. Teachers will be contacting parents sometime in November to schedule an SLP Conference if applicable.Teachers hope that all parents of 7th/8th graders will take advantage of the Arena Conferences from 4:00 – 7:00pm. They are a wonderful opportunity for parents to check and monitor the progress of their child and also to get involved with DPMS. If parents cannot attend and have questions or concerns about their child’s progress, they are encouraged to call DPMS at 464-5800 and set up an appointment to meet with their child’s teachers.

Jogathon Continues to be a Successful Fundraiser

The goal of $6,000 was surpassed as students collected almost $6,100 to support ASB student activities such as assemblies, band, choir, athletics, drama, special recognition activities and other student awards/incentives.Almost two hundred students collected money during the Jogathon.   Sixth grader Cassidy Krahn brought in $455 to claim top prize – a new bicycle.  Cassidy also earned the privilege of throwing a cream pie in the face of Principal Brent Seedall.  Seventh grader Andrew Handelin brought in $359 in pledges for second place.  Andrew earned the right to put a cream pie in Asst. Principal Tim Mulvey’s face.  What a treat!Prizes were given to the top ten students who brought in over $100.  These ten students brought in a total of $1,940. for the school.  The sixth grade class brought in the most money to win the class competition and received an ice-cream bar.  The top thirty students received the coveted “Cut In Line Pass” and students who brought in $30 or more received a “Homework Pass.”Mr. Seedall would like to thank all who contributed to this year’s Jogathon, especially the staff for their hard work, dedication and motivating the students to do their very best.  “This year’s Jogathon was successful because it was and continues to be a team effort from staff, students, parents and community members,” he said.  In the past 10 years, DPMS has reached their goal 9 out of the 10 years.  Mr. Seedall said “The parents and community are wonderful in supporting our school.  We appreciate all you do.”  “Thank you for your support!”

DPMS Drama and Choir Students Experience Broadway in Spokane

Thirty four middle school students and six chaperons attended Phantom of the Opera on Thursday, October 9 as an evening field trip at the INB Performing Arts Center.  Susan Olson and Gina Keller co-wrote a grant through Showbiz Kids. The Professional Stage Hand Union Local 93 donated the orchestra seat tickets through Showbiz Kids.  The DPMS students dressed in their formal evening attire and were really excited to have this great opportunity.  They listened to the soundtrack and read the summary about Phantom of the Opera, so they were prepared when they arrived in Spokane. The costumes, set decorations, music and special effects were extravagant and memorable.  The students experienced amazing actors and a musical score with memories that will last a lifetime. A special thank you to Showbiz Kids and the Professional Stage Hand Union Local 93 for making this a special and memorable evening for our students.

The bus leaves at 5:05 with a set route determined by those enrolled. We will also have Whitworth College students working in the Program to support math, science and literacy curriculum in our building. Sign up packets are in the main office. Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Taken Seriously at DPMS

Washington State passed House Bill #1444, which requires schools to intervene and take all steps necessary to stop bullying, harassment, and intimidation. The bill requires that all schools make it a priority to intervene and stop bullying and harassment that occurs in their building. “We were just kidding” and “They were just being middle school kids” is not an excuse for their behavior. We will be educating the students on what bullying and harassment is and what steps they will need to take if it is happening to them or they see it happening to someone else. We are using the Second Step curriculum, which is a violence prevention program used in grades six through eight. It is our hope that we can make school a place where all kids feel safe and are free from being harassed, intimidated, or bullied. We will take all complaints very seriously and will do whatever we need to do to get kids to stop.

Homework Center: A Key for Academic Success

Homework Center continues to be offered after school in conjunction with our new after school program “Stepping Stone.” The primary goal of Homework Center is to provide students with additional academic support and to help them with organizational skills. Thus, Homework Center is designed to help students get prepared, stay organized and experience success in the classroom. Homework Center is available from 3:00 – 4:30 pm Monday – Thursday. A staff member is available during this time to help students with class assignments, special projects and make-up work. We will also have a tutor available in the Stepping Stone After School Program from 3:00 – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday to help students with math facts and concepts, writing procedures and strategies, test preparation and organization skills. Please sign up for Homework Center by completing a Stepping Stone registration packet available in our main office. Contact Stepping Stone After School Coordinator Gina Keller at 464-5838 for further assistance or if you have any questions concerning Homework Center.
